Oppidum Sena, former city of Sena, and nowadays known as Seia, was founded 2.400 years ago by the Turduli. For a long time it was dominated by the Arabs and was definitely conquered by D. Fernando Magno in 1055 who demanded the construction of his castle. In 1132 D. Afonso Henriques donated the city of Seia to his loyal servant João Viegas in recognition for the services render by him. Four years later, the first king of Portugal gave Seia its first “Foral”, officially recognizing it as a Municipality, naming it Civitatem Senam (City of Seia), regulating its administration, privileges and borders, at the time accommodating half a dozen of little communities close by. The second ”Foral Novo” was given in 1510 by D. Manuel I, at that time the council was already composed by the parishes known as Passarela, Lages, Folhadosa, Pinhanços, Santa Comba, Sameice, and other little places. In the 19th Century the Council suffered a enlargement with the aggregation of important parishes such as Alvôco da Serra, Loriga, Vila Verde, Santa Marinha, Sandomil, São Romão, Valezim, Vide, Vila Cova à Coelheira and Torroselo. In the beginning of the 20th Century was then constituted by a whole new administrative chart with 29 Villages and 115 small places. |
